National Manufacturing Day is coming up on Friday, October 7. It’s a day across the country when manufacturers open up their doors for open houses and invite the public in to see what it is they do.
However, McPherson County is going a step beyond the national directive.
“One day isn’t enough for us,” said Kasi Morales, executive director of the McPherson Industrial Development Company (MIDC). “We want to celebrate McPherson’s industrial successes all month long.”
MIDC, the McPherson Chamber of Commerce, and the city of McPherson are celebrating manufacturing in McPherson County with an official public proclamation signed by city Mayor Tom Brown.
The proclamation reads, in part, “McPherson’s industrial base is one of the deepest in the Midwest for a town of our size. Manufacturing is a key driver in wealth creation.” (The entire proclamation can be found below.)
McPherson has over 50 manufacturers, and approximately one in five workers is a manufacturing employee, making McPherson County one of the most industrialized counties in Kansas on a per capita basis. And each year, more and more of these companies are opening up their doors to the public at large in the form of these open houses and public tours.
“We have eight throughout the county this year,” said Morales. “We’ve doubled every year since we started, for open houses. We’re really excited about it.”
“If you’ve often wondered what goes on behind some of those big walls,” added Mayor Brown, “Here’s your opportunity to see.”
Morales also publicly thanked the McPherson Chamber of Commerce for all the work they put into organizing and promoting the open houses.
“They reached out to area schools to help advertise this,” Morales explained, “To try to get students into our manufacturing facilities.”
These open house tours aren’t just for the curious -- they’re also an excellent opportunity for the younger generation to get an idea of what local jobs are available right here in McPherson that also provide a good living. It’s a chance for students and parents to find out what technical skills are needed so students can plan out an education beyond high school for a job that requires specific technical training rather than a four-year college degree.

To the people of McPherson, Kansas, Greetings,
The City of McPherson is proud of is long history and heritage of manufacturing.

McPherson has over 50 manufacturers creating more than 4,260 direct industrial jobs with an annual payroll that exceeds $268,781,000 million. These industrial jobs support local businesses and create additional “spin off” or indirect jobs, touching all aspects of our economy; and
Wheras, McPherson has a cluster of process-manufacturing companies with heavy concentrations in energy, chemical-plastics, pharmaceutical, machinery manufacturing and agriculture businesses. Together our industries drive a County economy;
Now, Therefore, I, Thomas A. Brown, Mayor of McPherson, Kansas, do herby proclaim the month of October 2016 as McPherson County Manufacturing Month and recognize October 7, 2016 as Manufacturing Day and urge all citizens to join in this observance.
