OTTAWA —The weekend tournaments haven’t been kind to McPherson High’s volleyball team.

For the second straight weekend the Bullpups struggled against high-quality competition as they went 1-4 Saturday in the Ottawa Invitational, which came on the heels of a 2-4 weekend at Newton.

MHS’ win came against Highland Park (25-19, 25-13).

The losses were to Blue Valley North (13-25, 20-25), Heritage Christian (23-25, 17-25), Olathe Northwest (12-25, 15-25) and Shawnee Mission West (19-25, 19-25).

MHS, which was 12-2 just a couple of weeks ago, is now 16-11. Most of its losses, though, have been to ranked teams or teams in Classes 6A and 5A.

“We had another tough weekend of competition.  This competition will help us be prepared for postseason,” MHS coach Christy Doile said. “We competed pretty well most of the weekend.  Competition has been really strong at serving and attacking. We struggled on receive, making the rest of our game tougher to execute. I was proud of the girls' effort to compete, as we made some nice plays and improved our game, even if the score doesn't reflect our progress. The tournament featured several ranked teams and D-I and D-II athletes.”

The Bullpups head to El Dorado on Tuesday, then host their annual tournament on Saturday at the Roundhouse.
