McPherson’s eighth-grade volleyball A-team improved its record to a sparkling 11-2 on Monday by sweeping bigger schools Salina Lakewood and Derby.
The Bullpups defeated Lakewood in an exciting three-setter (25-16, 18-25, 16-14) and then took out Derby in straight sets (25-22, 25-11).
“The girls came out on fire against Lakewood in the first set,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “Hailey Henson served the first 8 points of the game and our offense was clicking. Then in the second set, we lost some energy and focus and let them back in the match. We were able to pull things together a little more for the third set and came away with a close victory. Against Derby, we were down big in the first set and shouldn't have been. This match showed that that it's tough for us to carry over our intensity from set to set and match to match. We have a week-and-a-half left of the season, and we will work extra hard to play at a high level and not play down to our competition.”
The B-team split, losing to Lakewood (12-25, 18-25), but defeating Derby (25-21, 25-16). The Bullpups continue their push to get back to .500 as they are 8-9 on the year after a slow start.
“The first set we served well and aggressive,” MMS coach Aimee McDaniel said. “The rest of the games we lacked focus and energy. It has been difficult for the girls to adjust to the different lineups because of illness and injuries. Hopefully we will have consistency with our lineups for the remainder of the season.”
The Bullpups host Derby North on Thursday.
