McPherson’s seventh-grade volleyball A-team kept up with the eighth-graders as a Monday sweep of Derby and Salina Lakewood pushed the Bullpups’ record to 11-2.
MMS defeated Derby (25-10, 25-12) and Salina Lakewood (25-19, 25-12).
“We continued to adjust well to some lineup changes and the girls did a nice job of helping each other out,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We played well against Derby. After a solid first set against Lakewood, we lost focus a little in the second set and got stuck in serve receive. The girls did a great job of coming back and turned a 3-point deficit around into an 8-2 run before a Lakewood timeout, and then finished out the match.”
There were several standouts, Bohme said.
“Lauren Labertew, Ella Schmid and Brette Doile had some nice hustle plays and saved some balls,” she said. “Libero Megan Everhart had a couple of key defensive plays in the second set against Lakewood. Rhian Swanson, Sophia Herrera and Cameron Pelzel did a nice job of attacking the ball and playing the net. We continued to struggle a little with serving. Kaylee Zeitlow was the lone 100 percent server on the night.”
The B-team also swept, with three sets needed to defeat Derby (25-11, 20-25, 15-12) while Salina Lakewood put up a good fight in defeat (25-16, 28-26).
“Tonight the girls did a great job hustling on the court and made some great saves,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “However, we struggled with our serves and let too many balls hit the floor. We played really well in our first set against both Derby and Lakewood, then lost some of our momentum in the second set. We are going to try some lineup changes for the next game and hopefully continue to improve throughout the rest of the season.”
