EL DORADO — McPherson High’s volleyball team is in its first slump in a long, long time.

The Bullpups, who at one time were 12-2 and riding an 11-match winning streak, are now 16-13 after losing their first two AVCTL Division III matches of the season on Tuesday.

El Dorado routed the Bullpups in the first set 25-10 and then held off MHS in a tense struggle 31-29 to complete the sweep.

MHS then lost a three-setter to Augusta (24-26, 25-19, 23-25).

“We have to eliminate the silly or not-so-smart decisions during the rallies,” MHS coach Christy Doile said. “We give too many points away. We are our worst enemy. We played some really exciting rallies and fell short three times.”

Doile added that it wasn’t that MHS played that poorly, but El Dorado and Augusta stepped up their games and played well.

In the El Dorado match, Doile said the Bullpups had numerous set points at the end, but the Wildcats were able to prevail. Against Augusta it was tied at 23-all in the second set, but the Orioles won the final two points.

The good news of the night was two wins by the MHS JVs. They defeated El Dorado (25-17, 25-11) and Augusta (25-15, 25-16).

The Bullpups are home on Saturday for their annual invitational.
