DERBY — As far as McPherson Middle School girls tennis coach Ricardo Sanchez was concerned, his Bullpups were the best team in the Pioneer League Tournament on Wednesday.

The Bullpups won five of the eight championships and went 4-1 in head-to-head matches against Salina Lakewood. But at the end of the day, the Bullpups were deemed second place and Lakewood first.

“Towards the end of the day, the (tournament) director realized they hadn't set a system to give out team points and they came up with one that didn't really make sense to me, nor did I agree with, but that is what they decided to go with,” Sanchez said. “But that doesn't take anything away from how well the girls played and how proud I am of them.”

The Bullpups won three of the four doubles divisions and two of the four singles divisions.

The meet finished the season for the Bullpups and the future is bright.

“The girls finished strong at the league tournament, along with their undefeated dual season,” Sanchez said. “It has been a special season, one I am glad I got to share with my sister, Patty. I want to thank the wonderful parents and families that made our duals and tournaments full of cheer and encouragement. I also want to thank Mac Advantage for all the hard work they put in to give these girls the opportunity to play throughout the summer. I had a lot of fun coaching these girls and look forward to seeing them all continue to grow next year.”
