Three people were hospitalized Thursday after a chemical spill at a plant in Hesston. The spill happened Thursday morning at the GVL Poly Plant located about two miles north of Hesston, off of old Hwy 81.

At least six employees reported problems breathing and were checked out at local hospitals. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Portions of the plant were closed down and evacuated, but it has since been completely reopened.

According to the Harvey County Sheriff’s office, several gallons of an isocyanate product spilled. It’s a chemical used in manufacturing coolers and can be dangerous if inhaled.

An investigation into the chemical spill has been opened by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s office in Wichita.
