NORTH NEWTON — It was a couple of much-needed wins for McPherson College’s soccer teams on Wednesday against teams lower than them in the standings.
The Mac men dominated Bethel for a 3-0 victory, their fourth shutout of the season. They are now 3-2 in the KCAC as they stayed within shouting distance of the leaders and moved to 8-3-1 overall.
“We had a complete performance tonight,” Mac coach Doug Quint said. "Defensively, we were disciplined and it was nice to earn a clean sheet. Offensively, we were calm in possession and took what their defense gave us. I felt we needed to be a little more dynamic in the final third, but that is something we can address in training."
Goals for the Bulldogs were by Nick Torres and David Mwinga. The Bulldogs also were the beneficiary of an own goal as Bethel made a misplay in the second half.
The No. 1 team in the country, Oklahoma Wesleyan, comes to town on Saturday as part of homecoming activities. The action begins at 8 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
• MAC WOMEN 4, BETHEL 1 — Ana Guerrero sparked the Bulldogs with a pair of goals as they improved to 2-3 in the KCAC and 6-4 overall.
Guerrero’s two goals came after Danielle Kakebeen had scored Mac’s first goal. Kayla Faust scored her first goal of the year to complete the Mac scoring.
Bethel’s only goal came late off a richochet.
The Bulldogs dominated with an 18-3 advantage in shots.
Mac is back home on Saturday to take on Oklahoma Wesleyan, with the action starting at 5:30 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
