McPherson College’s Homecoming – Oct. 14-16 – will include celebrations of the 40th anniversary of one of the college’s flagship programs and the dedication of a new “front porch” for the campus. However, Monica Rice, director of alumni and constituent relations, said she is most excited about seeing alumni, friends, students, and staff all spending time together.
“Homecoming will be a wonderful opportunity to come back to campus, re-connect with friends and fellow graduates, and look forward to a bright future,” she said.
Anyone driving by on Kansas Avenue this week has probably noticed the work going on at the intersection with Eby Street. At 11:15 a.m. on Oct. 15, people can get a closer look at what all the hullabaloo is about.
Thanks to a generous gift from the Peters family, McPherson College is building a new campus entrance feature for a more attractive and inviting welcome from the south. On Saturday, people will have the opportunity to see the full concept art for the entrance and meet the Peters family in a 15-minute ceremony.
Also on Saturday, McPherson College will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the college’s automotive restoration program – which is the only program to offer a four-year bachelor’s degree in the craft. The program started in 1976, so the college will be celebrating with an open house of the restoration facilities from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., a Model T build at 10:45 a.m., and antique car rides from noon to 1 p.m.
Many more events are planned for the weekend, with something to appeal to every interest, including:
Sports events for volleyball, both soccer teams and, of course, football.
Athletic events in support of student scholarships – the Art Ray 5K and Pedals for Paul.
Reunions for the classes of 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011, as well as a reunion for track and cross country.
Arts events – “Blithe Spirit” and choir concert
A special worship service on Sunday morning.
Fun for the kids with inflatable games and the Student Activities Fair.
Great food – tailgate luncheon and the annual Bulldog Bash!
