DERBY — McPherson’s eighth-grade girls were outlasted in a thrilling three-set volleyball match by Newton on Saturday in the finals of the Pioneer League Tournament.

Newton won the championship match 18-25, 25-20, 15-7 as this group of Bullpups finished second to the Railers for the second year in a row.

MMS had made the semifinals with a 24-26, 25-17, 15-13 triumph over Salina Lakewood.

In pool play, the Bullpups won over Derby North (25-21, 25-16) and Salina South (25-13, 25-15).

MMS finished the year 16-4.

“I am so proud of all the hard work the girls have put in this season,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We were hoping for a different ending, but unfortunately Newton was just too much for us to handle in the second and third sets. Excellent hustle plays and saves by all the girls led to some thrilling volleyball during bracket play. The girls have nothing to hang their heads about because they kept fighting until the very end and never gave up. I am definitely excited for what's to come for these girls. If they stick together and keep improving, they will be an exciting group to watch in high school.”
