CLEARWATER — Hesston High’s volleyball team won its first three matches in Saturday’s Clearwater Invitational, but dropped its last two.
The Swathers stormed through pool play with wins over Clearwater (25-18, 25-16), Haven (25-9, 25-22) and Wichita Trinity (25-15, 17-25, 25-22).
Douglass rallied to outlast the Swathers in three sets in the semifinals. After Hesston won the first set 28-26, Douglass charged for 25-20 and 25-19 wins.
Hesston lost another three-setter in the third-place match (20-25, 25-20, 20-25).
“This is always a great tournament for us to play in the week before sub-state,” said Hesston coach Jason Peters, whose team is now 29-6 on the year. “And we had several very competitive matches. There were a number of times today when we played well and looked like a very strong team. We have had a tough stretch of 16 matches in the past two weeks against good competition that has worn us out a bit, but has also pushed us to play at a higher level and identify areas to keep working on.”
Hesston’s Kailey Jo Ince and Alaina Dunlavy were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Swathers are home on Tuesday against the Wichita Defenders and Concordia. The sub-state is Saturday at Beloit.
