Viking spikers finish 2nd at Abilene

ABILENE — Abilene, the No. 1 volleyball team in Class 4A Division I, was the only school  to hand Smoky Valley a loss during the Cowgirls’ Invitational on Saturday.

It came in the championship match as Abilene was a 25-12, 25-17 winner.

Until then, the Vikings had enjoyed a great day. In pool play they defeated Royal Valley (25-7, 25-17), Topeka High (25-16, 25-23) and Ellsworth (25-19, 25-18).

Smoky toppled Class 5A Salina Central in the semifinals (25-19, 25-22) to advance to the title match.

Here are the Viking leaders:

• Vs. Royal Valley — Kate Deterding led in kills with 12, Rilee Carson was tops in digs with 13 and Delaney Johnson had 22 assists.

• Vs. Topeka High — Deterding led in kills with 11 and Haley Peterson added 9. Carson’s 11 digs were tops and Johnson had 25 assists.

• Vs. Ellsworth — Deterding slammed down 13 kills, Carson had 10 digs and Halle McClure had 7.  Johnson had all 21 assists.

• Vs. Salina Central — Deterding and Peterson had 14 and 9 kills, respectively. Deterding accumulated 12 digs, while Johnson and McClure had 9 apiece. Johnson had 25 assists.

• Vs. Abilene — Deterding had 11 of the team’s 17 kills. McClure had 9 digs, one more than Peterson. Johnson’s 14 assists were tops.
