WINFIELD — Smoky Valley’s Katie Bellah and Emily Roets capped their Viking tennis careers on Saturday by taking fourth place in the Class 4A State Tournament.
They had gone undefeated in three matches on Friday, then lost to eventual champions Ellea Ediger and Rachel Ivers of McPherson 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.
They then dropped a 6-3, 6-3 verdict to Buhler’s Kendra Nachtigal and Michaela Esau in the third-place match. They finished the year 24-12.
They improved by one place as they took fifth in 2015.
The Vikes’ Kira Haxton wound up medaling as well as she took ninth in singles. She defeated Miege’s Lily Gibson 9-6 in her final match. She is only a sophomore, so she’ll be a state factor for the next two years.
The Vikings took sixth place as a team with 19 points, but only three points out of fourth. Wichita Collegiate (38), McPherson (35), Independence (26), Andover Central (22) and Miege (20) were ahead of them.
