MAIZE — McPherson’s ninth-grade volleyball team started strong on Saturday in the AVCTL Tournament, but ran out of steam to finish in fourth place.
MHS had won its pool with wins over Maize (25-23, 16-25, 15-13), Derby (25-23, 25-11) and Salina South (25-21, 8-25, 15-13).
The Bullpups then lost in the semifinals to Hutchinson (18-25, 25-10, 7-15) and in the third-place match to Salina South (15-25, 25-20, 12-15).
Hutchinson went on to defeat Campus for the title.
“The girls really worked hard to earn first in pool play,” MHS coach Danica Fitzmorris said. “After lunch we played Hutchinson, whom we had beaten twice in regular season and came up on the short end of that game. We also played Salina South for the second time in the day and again came up short. We had a tough time with communication and not erring on our side of the net (balls hit in net or out of bounds, passing errors, and serving errors). We just couldn’t finish. We ended our season with 18 wins, a fourth-place finish at the tournament and I am proud of their improvement this year. They will only get better with time and effort.”
