The numbers were simply too good to overlook.

Even in defeat on Saturday, a 21-19 setback to Friends, McPherson College’s Travis Steenson was so good that he was named the KCAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Very seldom does the KCAC go with a player from a losing team, but Steenson had 7 solo tackles and 17 assists. He entered the game No. 2 in the country in tackles.

Steenson is a McPherson High graduate who earned All-Jayhawk Conference honors while playing for Butler Community College two years ago.

The KCAC also went against the norm when it picked Bethel’s Jaylon Sykes as the Offensive Player of the Week. Like Steenson, Sykes had eye-popping numbers as he carried 41 times for 330 yards and scored five touchdowns in the Threshers’ 70-56 loss to Sterling.
