HAYS — McPherson High’s ninth-grade football team cruised past Hays 32-12 on Monday.
“A rather slow start as our kids had not had a true freshman game for two weeks and it showed,” MHS coach Heath Gerstner said. “I thought the second half may have been one of the better halves we have played all fall.”
The defense permitted just one touchdown as the other Hays score came on a kickoff return.
“I thought Hays was very physical to start, but our kids responded well,” Gerstner said. “They really stacked the box and tried to take away our running game a bit, but Kaleb Hoppes connected with many different receivers including Jakob Feil, Cody Stufflebean, Riley Koehn and Zach Wankum.”
The Bullpups wrap up their regular season on Monday hosting Wamego.
There was no junior varsity game on Monday as Hays did not have enough players.
