HAYS — Led by meet champion Calvin Shannon, Smoky Valley’s boys captured the Class 4A Regional Cross Country Meet by a whopping 32 points on Saturday and have put themselves in top state contention for next week in Wamego.
Shannon ran a 15:27 (43 seconds faster than the closest time) for top honors and was joined as a medalist by teammate Logan Windholz, who was 10th in 16:33. Missing by one place of medaling was Josh Peterson, who was 11th in 16:40.
Other Viking times were Zach Lott (22nd in 17:29), Austin Lutfield (32nd in 17:40), Isaac Peterson (34th in 17:45) and Carter Couchman (90th in 20:10).
The Vikings scored 76 points to defeat qualifiers Ulysses (108) and Pratt (110). Hays just missed as it took fourth with 112.
“Not only did we finish well, we ran some great times on a tougher course,” Viking coach Holly Lindquist said. “Calvin ran an outstanding race with an outstanding time. The rest of the team held their own and placed where they needed to.”
The Viking girls were 10th and none of their runners advanced. Places and times were Gracie Lott (45th in 22;14), Hailey Priddy (51st in 22:28), Cailey Cornett (70th in 24:11) and Kaleigh Salzman (74th in 24:22).
