McPherson High’s 9th-10th-grade football team exploded to a 36-6 halftime lead over Wamego here Monday and waltzed to a 44-22 victory in the season finale.
Wamego was just overwhelmed from the start.
"We really did not have any stars in the game except it was a complete team effort," MHS assistant coach Heath Gerstner said. "The game did not really have much flow, but we kept plugging guys in and were able to get everyone a ton of playing time and that is fun as a coach."
The Bullpups exploded for three first-quarter touchdowns and took the game by the throat.
"First and foremost, we're excited about the win to end our sub-varsity season," Gerstner said. "These kids work so hard day-in and day-out and to see them just progress and get better throughout the season has been a joy for our entire staff. This freshman group in particular really struggled in middle school against some big-time schools and to hear them all excited about football and looking up to the varsity guys is whats it all about."
Gerstner said he sees this group only getting better.
"I know (MHS head) coach Pavlovich and the football staff is excited about this freshman group in particular if they can stick together and get a whole lot bigger, faster, stronger come next fall," he said.
