Thomas More Prep defeated Berean Academy 2-0 on Monday in the opening round of the Class 4-1A Soccer Regional.
Its reward? A game less than 24 hours later against top-seed McPherson High.
The Monarchs and Bullpups will hook up at 6:00 tonight at McPherson Stadium. An MHS victory and it will host the winner of Rose Hill and Andover Central on Thursday.
“We played TMP early in the season and won (5-0), but that was a long time ago and this is a new season,” said MHS coach Chris Adrian, whose team is 12-4. “They are a young team which means they have probably improved a lot since we played them. But so are we and we have definitely changed for the better since that game.”
The start could be everything as the Monarchs will try to weather the Bullpup storm.
“I’m looking for us to come out fast and use our speed and athleticism to get after them early,” Adrian said. “Getting that first goal quickly is the key in a game like this. Being a postseason game, teams now have the opportunity to win a game without scoring a goal, so I anticipate TMP might put a few more defenders behind the ball and make it as difficult as they can for us to score goals.”
