Overtaking and Passing Buses:

(STO #81 & 82 and KSA 8-1556 & KSA 8-1556a Find the exact wording here: tinyurl.com/j9odclp&; tinyurl.com/hj6pefr)

Last week was National School Bus Safety Week and recently, the Traffic Section has observed an alarming tendency among McPherson commuters, to push the limits of these ordinances or ignore them altogether.

The driver of a vehicle meeting/overtaking any stopped school bus from either direction shall also stop before reaching the bus when the red lights are flashing for the purpose of receiving or discharging children. The driver of the meeting/overtaking vehicle shall not continue driving UNTIL the school bus resumes motion or the flashing RED lights and the stop signal arm are not in use.

A driver meeting/overtaking a school bus at a railroad crossing with 4-way flashing hazard/amber/yellow lights activated is not required to stop also —UNLESS the driver is following the bus.

Drivers should also observe the same safe following distance and space guidelines as for any semi-truck or vehicle bearing a large load; “IF YOU CANNOT SEE THEIR MIRRORS, THEY CANNOT SEE YOU.”

This is a moving violation in McPherson drawing a id="mce_marker"80 fine with church and day care buses —and an increased fine amount of $300 with school buses, plus another $78 in Municipal Court Costs added for either violation.

More important than any fine, THOSE FLASHING LIGHTS REMIND YOU: A CHILD'S LIFE IS FLASHING BEFORE YOUR EYES!

“The Traffic Stop” appears weekly to address topics of traffic enforcement in the City of McPherson. The Traffic Section of Patrol Bureau organizes “The Traffic Stop.”
