LEAVENWORTH — Doug Quint’s worst fears came true on Wednesday.
A long road trip against second-division Saint Mary resulted in a draw and a loss for his McPherson College soccer teams as the day slowed the momentum they had built up.
It was an especially frustrating day for the Mac men, who outshot the Spires 25-9 but neither team could light the lamp in a 0-0 draw. Saint Mary goalie Enrique Gonzalez was under siege all day and was credited with 11 saves.
Mac is now 5-3-1 with two KCAC matches left to play, but has clinched a spot for the postseason tournament. The Bulldogs are 10-4-2 overall, but have two home games remaining. The first one is huge as Bethany comes to town on Saturday. The Swedes are ahead of the Bulldogs in the KCAC at 6-1-2.
The Bulldog women suffered a 1-0 setback. They are now 5-4 in the KCAC with two matches left to play and 9-5 overall.
Just like the men, the Bulldog women held a wide edge in shots, but a first-half goal by Saint Mary’s Justine Brown proved to be the winner.
Reigning KCAC Defensive Player of the Week Sheryl Evans made 5 saves in goal.
Mac hosts Bethany at 3 p.m. Saturday, then closes at home Tuesday against York.
