Fearless picks MHS in a close one

Fearless Forecaster’s upset special did not work out last week, leading our picker to a 17-4 ledger.

Fearless thought that McPherson College might pull off an upset of KCAC tri-leader Saint Mary here last Saturday after playing so many teams close in recent weeks. The Bulldogs did lead in the game, but the defensive-minded Spires shut then down the rest of the way for a 17-7 triumph.

Fearless is now 136-41 on the year for 77 percent as the clock is ticking down on his hopes of reaching 80 percent for the season.

Fearless also missed on the Bethel-Southwestern game as the Moundbuilders won for the first time this year.

Two area games were also misfires. FF didn’t go with Canton-Galva, which knocked off Goessel, while he also went with Little River, which was surprised by Ellinwood.

• AVCTL D-III •

• McPherson 21, Abilene 14 — FF likes the Bullpups no matter what, but if Abilene quarterback Ryan Wilson doesn’t play the margin could be more.

• Buhler 56, Circle 7 — The Crusaders will have their starters on the bench after halftime.

• Augusta 33, Rose Hill 13 — The Orioles are starting to find their early season form.

• Maize South 27, Andover Central 7 — Andover Central is definitely the most disappointing team in D-III this year.

• Mulvane 42, Winfield 7 — Another tough year for the Vikings.

• Last week — 6-0. Season — 31-8.

• McPHERSON AREA •

• Moundridge 33, Peru, Okla. 14 — Peru is an 8-man team stepping up to play 11-man for this game.

• Sedgwick 28, Inman 20 — The Teutons control their own destiny.

• Little River 42, St. John 14 — The Redskins should be able to clinch a playoff spot.

• Ellinwood 48, Canton-Galva 42 — Fearless was going to pick the Eagles until he saw what Ellinwood did to Little River.

• Clay Center 35, Smoky Valley 21 — The Vikings will still advance to postseason play. Clay Center beat Rock Creek by 45, the Vikings won 36-29.

• Hesston 31, Marion 14 – The Swathers roll into the playoffs.

• Last week — 4-2. Season — 33-12.

• KCAC •

• Tabor 44, McPherson College 14 — The Bulldogs are wearing down. If they can add depth for next year, they could have a big turnaround.

• Friends 35, Bethany 34 — Don’t be surprised if the Swedes pull an upset.

• Sterling 49, Saint Mary 34 — The Warriors are going to burst the Spires’ bubble.

• Kansas Wesleyan 45, Bethel 14 — The Coyotes aren't going to look past the Threshers.

• Ottawa 52, Southwestern 10 — The Braves are going to take out a lot of frustration.

• Last week — 3-2. Season — 32-12.

• BIG 12 •

• Oklahoma 72, Kansas 21 — How much of a heart does Bob Stoops have?

• Kansas State 27, Iowa State 9 — The Cyclones won’t be able to do anything against that tough Wildcat defense.

• Baylor 42, Texas 21 — The final nail in Charlie Strong’s coffin?

• Texas Tech 65, TCU 52 — Another 4-hour plus game with 1,000-plus yards.

• West Virginia 31, Oklahoma State 28 — The Cowboys weren’t exactly impressive against KU, while the undefeated Mountaineers could be doing something magical.

• Last week — 4-0. Season — 40-9.
