It was like last year revisited.
Central Christian College’s men, who lost so many basketball games last year in the closing moments, began their season the same way here Friday.
Deven Goodwin’s 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Bethel a 74-71 victory at noisy Alexander Arena. The Threshers erased a 5-point deficit in the final 6 minutes.
Goodwin’s basket completed a brilliant 27-point night as he’ll be one of the KCAC’s top players.
Michael Gholston led CCC with 22 points. Also in doubles were Sean Guillory (12) and Sam Clayborn (11). The Tigers played without Alonzo Stafford, who is awaiting a ruling on an extra year of eligibility.
The Tigers play another KCAC school on Tuesday when they travel to Kansas Wesleyan.
Central (71) — Gholston 22, Guillory 12, Clayborn 11, Burton 9, Nwosuh 9, Warren 8.
Bethel (74) — Miller 12, Goodwin 27, Banister 12, Mitchell 7, Robinson 9, Marshall 5, Kirkland 2.
• BETHEL WOMEN 50, CCC 33 — The Tigers certainly played well enough defensively to win, but Bethel shut down them on the offensive end.
Central had only seven players take part and Abbie Banks was the leader with 8 points. It was a brutal first half by both teams, with Bethel leading 25-18 and it didn’t get much better after that.
The Lady Tigers host York on Thursday.
CCC (33) — Floyd 6, Kalthoff 4, Grimaldo 7, Banks 8, Hearne 4, Glessner 4.
Bethel (50) — McKinney 10, Pineda 2, Carter 2, Sumpter 12, Schroeder 7, Johnson 8, Schrag 3, Schmieder 2, Kennedy 2, Schunn 2
