WAMEGO — Calvin Shannon and the Smoky Valley Vikings gave it their best shot.
The Vikings gave Maize South all they could handle before finishing second to the Mavericks in the Class 4A State Cross Country Meet on Saturday at hilly Wamego Country Club.
Smoky Valley scored 72 points, just 5 back of Maize South,
As for Shannon, one of the pre-meet favorites, he led early but wound up taking third in 16:49 to finish behind Wichita Collegiate’s Lakelin Conrad and Maize South’s Eathan Kossover. Conrad ran a blistering 16:14
The Vikings had two other medalists in Logan Windholz (14th in 17:30) and Josh Peterson (18th in 17:36).
Other Vikes were Zach Lott (26th in 17:52), Carter Couchman (51st in 18:36), Isaac Peterson (62nd in 18:55) and Austin Lustfield (76th in 19:16).
“I'm thrilled with our state team placing,” Smoky Valley coach Holly Lindquist said. “Of course, a state championship trophy would be welcome, but I'm happy with second place. I think the boys were disappointed because they had their heart set on first, but they have nothing to hang their heads for. The boys gave it everything they had. We were 5 points away from first, which is a little harder to swallow knowing that we were that close. We had three individual state medalists, which is quite the accomplishment. Calvin, Logan and Josh all finished better than last year."
