McPherson College’s women’s basketball team begins its season tonight with a road game against Randall University in Moore, Okla.
Randall formerly was known as Hillsdale Baptist and has been an outstanding program in recent years. The teams played the season opener last year as well, with the Bulldogs losing an 85-82 verdict in overtime at the Sport Center after letting a good-sized lead get away.
Mac coach Gordon Reimer has to replace a tremendous senior class, led by Bailey Brown, Ashton Bruner and Sunny Smart, as well as inside presence Georgia Smart, point guard Whitney Jefferson and forward Megan Acklin. The Bulldogs were fifth in the KCAC at 10-10 and finished 13-18 overall as they played a brutal non-conference schedule.
Among the key returnees are guards Kristina Battle, Brooke Racette and Reagan McClellan, along with post Amanda Allen. Racette and McClellan are attempting to bounce back from knee injuries suffered during the season.
Reimer has brought in a large recruiting class and several of his newcomers will play immediately. The big name is Hesston High All-Stater Cami Richardson, a four-year standout for her father, Matt, who was a McPherson College star for coach Roger Trimmell during his playing days.
The Bulldogs make their home debut Friday against Haskell, which has been a nationally ranked team at times the past couple of years.
