HESSTON — Hesston High’s victory over Sterling wasn’t totally unexpected on Tuesday, but maybe the ease of the outcome was.
The Swathers demolished the Black Bears 48-8 in the first round of the Class 3A football playoffs.
After leading only 7-0 after a quarter, the Swathers pounded out 21 second-period points to take a 28-0 lead, then continued their domination with three more third-quarter scores.
As usual, Hesston had a dynamically balanced offense with 285 yards on the ground and adding 178 through the air.
Quarterback Zach Esau was tremendous. He ran for 124 yards and a touchdown while completing 8 of 12 passes, good for three touchdowns — two to Zach Vogt. Zach Anderson caught the other touchdown.
Parker Roth provided some thunder on the ground with 116 yards on just 12 carries and he added two scores. Alex Hostetler provided the other rushing touchdown.
Hesston, 7-3, has now won six in a row and is home again on Saturday to take on Chaparral, which was a 48-16 winner over Douglass.
