LEAVENWORTH — Three McPherson College cross country runners have qualified for the NAIA national meet.
Jonathan Dominguez and Michael Janzer qualified for the Mac men during the KCAC Championships on Saturday. Lauren Wankum, a McPherson High graduate, advanced on the women’s side.
It was an especially good day for the Mac men overall as they scored 96 points and finished third behind Saint Mary and Kansas Wesleyan, which move on to nationals as a team.
Dominguez was 9th in 26:19.0 to earn All-KCAC honors. Janzer placed 15th in 26:44.5 and received All-KCAC honorable mention.
Christian Graham of Saint Mary won the individual title in 24:57.9.
Also for Mac, Jerod Fuller finished 22nd (27:12.1), followed by Kurt Katzdorn in 25th (27:27.4) and Jesse Freeman in 31st (27:41.4). Casey Zimmerman was 38th (28:08.7), Gavin Hightower finished 47th (28:32.8), Gustavo Pelayo Manzo was 52nd (28:59.2) and Miguel Luna-Sanchez took 74th (31:02.7).
The Mac women were ninth as a team, but Wankum had a great day by placing 6th overall with a time of 19:16.7, earning All-KCAC honors.
Also for Mac, Laura Gibson finished 46th (21:41.0), followed by LeaAnn Myers in 57th (22:08.6), Rachel Foreman in 66th (22:41.2), Ane' Archuleta in 67th (22:48.3), Erika Doty in 70th (23:06.8) and Taylor Dreiling in 78th place (24:21.6).
Friends edged host Saint Mary, 72-74, for the team title, while Saint Mary’s Lorena Moreno won the individual crown with a KCAC championship record time of 18:09.1.
The NAIA National Cross Country Championships will be Nov. 19 at the North Farm Cross Country Course in Elsah, Ill., just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Mo.
Dreiling and Manzo were recognized as McPherson's Cross Country Champions of Character honorees.
