SAN ANTONIO — Monday night’s exhibition basketball matchup between the University of Texas-San Antonio and Arkansas Tech had big meaning for McPherson sports fans.

USTA is coached by former Bullpup All-Stater and later NBA player Steve Henson, who is in his first year after serving as Lon Kruger’s assistant at numerous stops, the most recent Oklahoma University.

Meanwhile Arkansas Tech is coached by another former Bullpup, Chad Kline.

Henson’s team got the better of Kline’s, but just barely. Giovanni De Nicolao’s layup with 2 seconds left gave the Roadrunners a 91-89 victory in what was Henson’s first game as coach.

Henson’s team opens for real on Friday when it plays at Fresno State. It then plays Sunday at Oregon State.

For Kline’s team, known as “The Wonder Boys,” it plays another exhibition game on Saturday against Livin’ The Dream, then opens for real on Nov. 17 against Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Kline, in his third year as head coach, produced a 15-14 season last year.
