WICHITA — McPherson College’s men’s soccer team was 10 minutes away from advancing to the NAIA National Tournament.
The Bulldogs overcame a 2-0 deficit with three goals in 8 minutes in the second half on Saturday to take a 3-2 lead, but Friends scored in the game’s 79th minute to tie the game at 3-all.
Neither team scored the rest of regulation and in overtime. It finally came down to penalty kicks and the Falcons were able to double the Bulldogs 4-2 to win the game.
The Falcons will join Oklahoma Wesleyan as the KCAC’s representative to nationals.
After a scoreless first half, Friends scored a pair of quick goals to take a 2-0 lead. But Mac charged back as Brayam De La Cruz, Edward Gomez and Chris Kelly all scored, with Gomez and Kelly’s goals coming just 27 seconds apart.
The game goes down officially as a tie, which left Mac with a final 14-4-3 record. Friends takes a 14-5-2 record to nationals. The Falcons had defeated the Bulldogs 3-2 in overtime earlier this year.
