An up-and-down basketball game ended on an “up” for McPherson College’s women here Saturday.
Brooklyn Coe’s driving layup with 2.7 seconds left in the game gave the Bulldogs a come-from-behind 57-55 victory over St. Gregory’s to give them a 4-1 record heading into their KCAC opener with county rival Bethany on Thursday.
Coe’s basket completed a Mac comeback as it had trailed 54-46 with 3:25 to go. Isabella Bacon’s steal with 5.8 seconds remaining gave the Bulldogs the chance and they made a most of their opportunity on a night where they struggled in all facets of the game, yet found a way to win.
“I told the team in the locker room that my biggest concern so far had been how we had been finishing games,” Mac coach Gordon Reimer said. “We’ve had good leads in the fourth quarter and won, but we haven’t finished games strong. Maybe this will give us some confidence.”
Mac was up 7-4 early, but St. Gregory’s went on a 15-5 sizz to take a 19-12 lead. However, the Bulldogs finished the half strong as Bacon hit a trio of 3-pointers in the second quarter, including a shot at the buzzer, to push Mac up 31-27.
The third quarter was all Cavaliers as they outscored the Bulldogs 16-9. But Mac had one last burst as it didn’t allow a field goal the last 4 minutes.
The Bulldogs were just 21 of 67 from the field, 10 of 19 from the line and turned it over 23 times. But their tenacity made up for the physical shortcomings.
Bacon again led Mac with 15 points off the bench, making 4 of 5 from 3-point. Brooke Zimmerman added 12 points. While Cami Richardson scored only 7 points, she had a natural instinct for the ball by hustling to 12 rebounds.
Kylee Tatum tallied 18 points to lead the Cavaliers and Kelsie Howgard had 14, along with 11 rebounds. Whereas Mac is dominated by young players, St. Gregory’s had mostly veterans.
Mac’s game with Bethany on Thursday has a 6 p.m. start at the Sport Center.
