SALINA — A good turnout of 28 McPherson Aqua Pups competed at the Salina Aquatics Club "Fall Fling" swim meet over the weekend.
It was a great showcase for some of the smaller swim clubs from around the area, as it featured swimmers from not only Salina and Manhattan, but Western Kansas (Hays, Dodge City, Liberal) Emporia and Hutchinson.
It was a final tune-up for high school swimmers William Powers, Gage Stafford and Rece Reiman before their season kicked off this week. Powers took A Division 1st places in the 100 free, 100 back, 500 free, 200 IM and 200 free, earning a Missouri Valley Championship qualifying time on the 200 IM at 2:15.86. Stafford earned C Division 2nd place in 100 fly and 3rd place on 100 back, while Reiman took a B Division 1st in the 200 free at a time of 2:16.65.
Grady Bearly (9) made his competition debut in his first season with the team and earned a C Division 7th place on his 50 backstroke.
In the 8-and-under girls age group, Adelyn Barrow took 1st in the girls 25-yard butterfly, and claimed 2nd in the 25 back. For the 9-10 girls, Lexi Smith took B Division 1st in the 100 breast and 2nd in the 100 free, while Taiya Young took first on B Division 50 back. In 11-12 girls, Kierstan Trost took B Division 1st in 100 Free, as well as earning a District time in the event, and 2nd in the 50 back. Danica Brunk took 1st in the B Division 100 IM in the 11-12 group. Zoey Whorton took a 13-14 Girls B Division 1st in the 100 free, as well as 2nd places in 100 back, 50 free and 200 free (C Division).
For the boys in the 9-10 group, Roary Whorton claimed 1st place B Division swims in 50 fly, 50 free and 200 free, all three of which were also District qualifiers.
Other highlights from the meet were Danica Brunk picking up another 11-12 group District time in her 50 breast at a time of 45.00 and Audrey Bailey earning her first 13-14 District time in 50 free at 32.76. Matthew Powers added a pair 13-14 District times in the 200 free at 2:14.01 and 200 IM at 2:31.81. Claire Schmidt earned 10-and-under 100 breast District on her first time ever swimming the event. Amanda Starkel added 100 back district in the senior age group at 1:22.36, and Rhys Vanderhoof earned a 13-14 boys District Qualifier in the 100 free at a time of 1:04.46.
