In an effort to increase safety and decrease traffic congestion, the McPherson Police Department is encouraging local drivers this holiday weekend to think about other ways to navigate around the shopping areas of McPherson that are currently under heavy construction.

“Due to the KDOT (Kansas Department of Transportation) construction and the expected additional traffic for the Black Friday sales on both Thursday evening and Friday this week, I would encourage residents to think about an alternate route, one that maybe they hadn’t considered as of yet,” said Chief of Police Rob McClarty.

Chief McClarty suggested approaching McPherson’s Wal-Mart, for example, from the south off of Avenue A, or Kiowa Rd., rather than from Kansas Ave and Hwy 56.

“I think most of our residents know they can approach Kiowa Road off of 17thAvenue and/or off of Maxwell, if they’re on Kansas Avenue, and trying to get to Avenue A or Kiowa Road.

“Then just go to Centennial,” Chief McClarty continued. “And go back to the north on Centennial and come into the back side of the Wal-Mart business area.”
