When it comes to placing high in a large meet, McPherson High boys swimming coach Matt Morrow has to be realistic about his expectations.
While he has perhaps his most talented team in his three years as coach, he knows having a smaller number of swimmers works against the Bullpups in the team scoring.
But he still has high hopes for a upper-division standing on Tuesday when the Bullpups open their season at Newton. Meet time is 4 p.m.
“This is a big meet with Newton, Andover Central, Campus, Derby, Dodge City, El Dorado, Hutchinson and Winfield,” Morrow said. “Newton and Derby are big clubs with 30-plus swimmers each, so they should be the favorites to win the meet. If we finish in Top 4, I think it will be a great sign for our season.”
Morrow likes how balanced his team appears to be.
“I can't really single out any one swimmer in particular as everyone has come in to this season with a level of commitment that I've not seen in the past two years,” Morrow said. “Getting so close to winning our league championship really focused them for this year.”
It’s a busy week for the Bullpups, who also compete in another big meet on Saturday with the Maize Invitational.
