McPherson High wrestling coach Doug Kretzer is expecting a much more competitive dual match with Rose Hill than in years past.

The Bullpups open their season at home against the Rockets on Thursday, with mat time 6 p.m. in the auxiliary gym.

“Rose Hill has been a league foe for years, so we know their coaching staff and kids fairly well,” Kretzer said. “They've had problems with numbers in the past, but it looks like they've got the flexibility to fill all their weights with the exception of heavyweight. The Rose Hill kids always wrestle tough and with their numbers I anticipate a good dual.  They return three wrestlers who earned AVCTL honors last season, Kyle Sackett at 106, Grant Scheer at 152 and Chase Thrush at 170.”

Kretzer said the team is amped up and ready to kick off its season. MHS was a good dual team last year, finishing with an 11-4 record.

“We’re excited to start the season,” he said. “Practice has been great and our challenge matches have almost had an electric feel. We'll be without a couple starters, but I expect us to really get after it.”

The top returning Bullpup is four-year standout Austin Eldredge, who is wrestling at 138 to open the season. He is coming off a 27-8 season and was a regional champion.
