LINDSBORG — Smoky Valley’s wrestling team will be led by a pair of returning state placers from last season.

Austin Lustfield (3rd at 126 pounds in Class 4A) and Beck Elliott (6th at 170) lead what should be another strong Viking team this season. Smoky Valley finished second in the Central Kansas League and returns all but two starters.

“We return a strong group of seniors,” said Viking coach Ben Elliott, now in his 12th year. “Austin Lustfield and Beck Elliott will look to get back on the podium this season. We have high expectations for seniors Noah Lackey, Nick Karber, and returning qualifiers Austin Golden (145) and Allan Wampler (182).

Lustfield was 35-4 last season, while Elliott was 35-15. Wampler also reached the rare 30-victory plateau (30-16).

There’s also some good young wrestlers.

“The returning sophomores gained valuable experience and will be filling in some weights as well,” Elliott said. “This group of young men has worked really hard and continues to improve. We have high expectations for this season and look to improve our finishes from last season.”

Other starters back are Denton Jacobson at 106, Chase Pywell at 120, Cort Elliott at 152, Jon Burks at 195, Ethan Wampler at 220 and Nate Grosland at 285.

The Vikings open their season Saturday at the Riley County Invitational.
