It was apparent here Tuesday that McPherson’s seventh-grade girls and Goddard are at a different basketball skill-set at this stage in their development.
The Bullpup A-girls pitched a 43-0 shutout. Lauren Labertew’s 14 points led MMS, one more than Ella Schmid. Peyton Howard chipped in with 10.
“The girls played well tonight,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “They were excited to finally play a game, although they were hoping for more of a challenge. I thought our hustle and intensity were great throughout the entire game. Our zone defense was able to keep the ball out of the paint and allow us to get layup after layup. We will continue to work on our man offense, as we weren't able to run much in the first half, but did better after the break.”
The B-game was more of the same as MMS roared to a 24-4 rout. Reiley Wells led a balanced MMS offense with 6 points.
“It was fun watching the girls start to put things together and I think they had a ton of fun playing,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “We took away many positives and won big. It will get even better as the girls really start to apply everything they learn.”
