And they're still only juniors.

McPherson High's Taylor Robertson and Mandi Cooks officially passed the halfway mark of their prep careers here Friday in the season opener against El Dorado.

Wildcat coach Jordan Crawford probably wishes they were seniors because they'll have three more games left against his team.

Robertson and Cooks combined for 44 points as MHS blew the game open early with some deadly shooting and suffocating defense that for the game produced 38 turnovers and 31 steals.

Robertson made 11 of 15 shots — 6 of 10 from beyond the arc — and finished with 28 points and 4 steals, while Cooks added 16 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals.

But MHS coach Chris Strathman liked the way his other players complemented them as he used his bench extensively.

"We do know what we're going to get (from them) and I thought the other kids really brought effort and intensity," Strathman said. "I thought we had a lot of people getting on the floor after loose balls for extra steals and just giving us extra possessions."

MHS led 18-7 after a quarter despite an uncharacteristic 8 turnovers, but miscued only 4 more times the rest of the game.

"A lot of extra passes against their zone gave us open looks," Strathman said. "We started to get the ball inside a little more after we stressed that to them and were able to attack a little more inside-out, too."

El Dorado never made any kind of move and the game wound up going to running clock in the fourth quarter.

The Bullpups have a monster week coming up with a road game Tuesday at potential Class 6A state champion Derby, then return home to play defending Class 4A Division I state champion Miege, which has begun the season ranked No. 1 in the class.

There was no JV game as El Dorado didn’t have enough numbers, but a C-game was played and the Bullpups rolled to a 52-21 victory.

The troika of Andrea Sweat (19), Cassie Cooks (14) and Lakyn Schieferecke (12) propelled the Bullpups.
