Wrestling history made at MHS on Saturday

It was a history-making day Saturday as McPherson High hosted the state’s first-ever girls wrestling tournament at the same time the boys’ JV was having its annual McPherson Invitational.

“I’m most proud of the fact that we had a landmark day by offering the first-ever KSHSAA girls-only tournament in Kansas history,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “There were 26 girls wrestling from McPherson, Clearwater, Douglass, Junction City, Osawatomie, Newton and Atchison-Riverbend International. The girls matches were just as intense and exciting as the boys matches. Megan Manning won a war with a girl from Newton and I thought the roof was going to come off the building from the roar of the crowd. I was really pleased with our girls team, many of whom were wrestling for the first time ever. Manning, (Haley) Schafer, (J'anae) Spaich and (Nicole) Winsky were tough as nails on the day.”

The boys also had a terrific day.

“Not only do we have numbers, but quality depth,” Kretzer said. “We have numerous wrestlers who have never wrestled before this year, but the intensity in our room has many of them wrestling like veterans already. The team continued what they started Thursday... aggressive, aggressive, aggressive. I was very impressed with the performance of all of our boys, but these ones really stood out were (Landon) Frantz, (Jonah) Clarke, (Noah) Bratcher, (Ryder) Peterson, (Kourtney) Craig and Tristan Prater who stepped on the mat for the first time ever Saturday.”
