Strong effort by Aqua Pups

WICHITA — The McPherson Aqua Pups are halfway through their indoor swimming season.

The Pups competed in the Winter Qualifier over the weekend, hosted by the Wichita Aqua Shocks.

“We've got about 3 months to go with short course, and I am greatly impressed with progress I've seen so far and I am really looking forward to the winter half,” MHS coach Kyle Banman said.

Here are Banman’s highlights:

• Matthew Powers took 1st in the 200 breast (2.46 improvement to 2:47.14), 100 breast (3.15 cut to 1:14.24), and 400 IM (8.53 drop to 5:18.75).  He also took 4th in the 100 free and 500 free and 5th in the 100 fly. He ended his first half with an invite to the Winter Classic in Lawrence in 4 events: 50 free, 100 breast, 200 breast and 400 IM.

• Danica Brunk took 8th overall in the 50 free with a .45 cut to 30.97. She also cut .94 on 50 fly to 35.95, and 1.12 in the 100 free to 1:09.07.

• Rhys Vanderhoof cut time in all three of his races, most of which was 4.26 on 200 IM to 2:43.67, and he also placed 7th in the 100 free at a time of 1:03.05.

• Taiya Young cut 4.56 in her 50 fly to 51.69, 2.82 in her 100 breast to 1:54.79 and 2.26 in the 50 breast to 49.74.

• Claire Schmidt dropped 3.67 in her 100 IM.

• Zoey Whorton cut .64 in her 100 free to 1:08.73.

• McPherson swimmer Hailey Cutting, who competes with the Aqua Shocks, had a great set of races as well.  She had 4-plus second cuts in the 200 IM, 200 breast and 200 free, as well as a 3.3 cut in her 100 back.
