Great defense in both games led to the McPherson seventh-grade girls’ basketball sweep of Derby North here Monday.
The A-team clamped down for a 33-16 victory to move its record to 5-0. Peyton Howard had her best game of the year with 12 points and Ella Schmid just missed doubles with 9.
“Derby North was a quick, scrappy team, but we used our height advantage on the inside,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “Post player Peyton Howard had 8 first-quarter points on put-backs and post moves. In the second half, we did a better job of finishing our shots and running the plays correctly. Our defense continues to be solid and Lauren Labertew did a good job of playing man defense on their top shooter when we switched to a box-in-one.”
The B-team is now 2-3 after outlasting Derby North, 16-10. Sophia Herrera led a balanced MMS attack with 4 points.
“Tonight was the best complete effort we have had this year,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “Several girls have grown and stepped up tonight making great plays at crucial times. The offense can continue to improve. Defensively we were very strong and with some communication can be even better.”
MMS goes to Hutchinson on Thursday.
