DERBY — McPherson Middle School’s A-boys improved to 4-1 with a hard-earned 44-40 road win on Monday against Derby North.
Seth Madron’s 24 points topped the Bullpups and Aiden Hoover was next with 6.
“We battled through a lot of things tonight and I was very impressed with how the boys stuck together through a tough team, a lively crowd, some calls that didn’t go our way and broken-down plays,” MMS coach Eric Burghart said. “Seth carried us through some dark periods on offense with great ballhandling and timely shooting. Hoover, (Jayden) Dukes, Simon (Boese) and, again, Seth were all very active on defense and created a lot of extra possessions for us. A thanks to (MHS assistant) coach (Treg) Fawl for helping us out on Saturday in an offense that should continue to prove fruitful as the season rolls along.”
The B-team is now 1-4 after losing a 37-27 decision despite 6 points by Ty Kraemer.
“This was overall our best game as a unit,” Burghart said. “We really came alive after the first few minutes and put ourselves in a great position to win time after time. Sadly we had some tough breaks down the stretch and couldn’t do quite enough to keep it tight enough in the fourth. Michael Morgan did a great job of keeping his composure in some tight spots, Brayden Conquest laid his body on the line again and again in a great personal effort, and Ty Kraemer got a chance to show the fans what (assistant) coach (Ashtyn) Snider and I see in practice every day. As expected we continue to grow together and are looking more and more like a team every day.”
MMS is home to play Hutchinson on Thursday.
