McPherson High wrestling coach Doug Kretzer believes Thursday’s home dual with Buhler could come down to the final match, just as last Thursday’s dual with Smoky Valley did when Alex Grennan scored a pin for a one-point Bullpup victory.

MHS and Buhler renew their rivalry at 6 p.m. in the MHS Auxiliary Gym.

The Bullpups come in with an 8-2 dual record as they wrestled a whopping nine duals over three days last week. They defeated Smoky Valley and Chapman in Lindsborg, then went 5-2 over two days out at Colby.

Kretzer is excited as anytime it’s the Bullpups and Crusaders, the intensity level is off the charts.

“Should be a good dual,” said Kretzer, who said he is pleased with how his team has started the season. “They have four wrestlers who are potential state placers. After that I think their lineup is young.  I see a lot of similarities between both teams.  It is a rivalry match so both teams will really get after it.”

In fact, by Kretzer’s calculations, there could be little separation.

“I see this one coming down to bonus points. Who can get a fall in a close match and who doesn't give up the fall,” he said. “It should be a lot of fun with a good crowd. The energy level will be sky high.”
