McPherson High has been selected to host the first-ever Kansas Girls Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 11, according to a press release today. It will be open to all girls who wrestle for high school teams in Kansas.

According to the release from MHS coach Doug Kretzer, the USA Wrestling National Team Staff will be attending the tournament to show their support of Kansas girls participation.  Also attending will be the “Wrestle Like a Girl” executive administration.

There is a campaign under way to add girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. McPherson High recently hosted an invitational tournament that drew 26 girls from 13 schools.

KSHSAA rules require that a minimum of 24 member schools have varsity teams competing interscholastically during the regular season of competition before the Board of Directors could consider addition of a post-season tournament. Having 24 schools is not a guarantee that the Board must or will authorize a postseason championship, rather twenty-four is the minimum number required for consideration of a proposal which would have to come from the member schools.

More news will be available later.
