HUTCHINSON — Hutchinson handed McPherson’s seventh-grade A-girls their first basketball loss of the season on Thursday after five straight wins.
Hutch was a 38-30 winner. Lauren Labertew scored 10 points to lead the Bullpups, one more than Ella Schmid.
“It was a tough game tonight,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “For the first time, we were really tested and we were unable to handle the pressure. Then once we got into foul trouble, we weren't as aggressive. We came out in the second half and played great for a few minutes, but let up again. We learned a few things tonight and will work hard over Christmas Break and be ready to go again in January.”
The B-team gained the split with an 18-14 victory behind 5 points by Harper Smith. That evened MMS’ record at 3-3.
“We showed a lot of improvement tonight in the first half, but it was definitely a different game in the second,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “We looked like we did a week ago and the girls recognized that after the game. In the first we showed growth in passing, execution of plays, and movement on defense. If we play every half like we did the first one, this team has a great opportunity to win many games and most importantly have fun doing it.”
MMS’ next action is Jan. 5 at Salina Lakewood.
MMS A (30) — Labertew 10, Schmid 9, Howard 4, Pelzel 3, Zeitlow 2, Doile 2.
MMS B (18) — Smith 5, Herrera 4, Pearcy 4, Zeitlow 3, Swanson 2.
