McPherson High’s wrestling team is headed to the land of the unknown on Thursday when it makes its 2017 debut.
The Bullpups travel to Towanda to match up with Circle, which is new this year to AVCTL Division III.
“I don't know anything about them. I think their best kids are at 132, 160 and 220,” said MHS coach Doug Kretzer, whose team is 9-2 in dual matches this year.
Mat time is 6 p.m.
Kretzer admits he’s glad to get into the 2017 portion of the schedule.
“Winter sports are tough to run practice through Thanksgiving and Christmas break,” he said. “We've had a bunch of kids in and out of the (practice) room with family commitments. We've also been fighting some sickness. I'm ready to get the kids back in school and get their schedule back to normal.”
Despite all the distractions, Kretzer has no doubt his team will be focused on the T-Birds.
“We'll be ready to go Thursday,” he said. “We’re looking forward to the dual. We should have everyone back from injuries before Christmas, but (heavyweight Alex) Grennan got dinged at practice last Thursday and will be out with concussion protocol this week.”
The Bullpups will come back with a busy schedule as they compete Saturday in the Burlington Invitational, which also will have a girls division.
