SALINA — Salina Lakewood handed McPherson’s seventh-grade girls only their second basketball loss of the season on Thursday.
Lakewood was a 23-19 winner after the teams had entered the fourth quarter tied.
“Tonight was a case of us being outplayed,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “Lakewood came out as the more aggressive, composed team. Over Christmas break, we seemed to have forgotten many of our basic plays and we weren't able to run our offense like we did towards the beginning of the season. Kudos to Lauren Labertew for her steady play and non-stop hustle. She gave it her all for us tonight on offense and defense.”
Labertew led the Bullpups, now 5-2, with 11 points.
The B-team was doubled by Lakewood, 32-16. Emily Whorton led the Bullpups with 6 points as they are now 3-4.
“Christmas break must have lasted longer than we thought it did because we didn't show up until second half,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “First-day errors half way through the season do not help with success.”
MMS is home on Monday to take on Salina South.
MMS A (19) — Labertew 11, Howard 7, Schmid 1.
MMS B (16) — Whorton 6, Courtney 4, Smith 2, Unruh 2, Wells 2.
