Jayton Alexander scored 14 points and his cousin Max added 12 as McPherson’s eighth-grade boys improved to 4-3 here Thursday by outlasting Salina Lakewood, 45-41.
“First I must thank several of the high school players for coming out and supporting our eighth-graders,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “I think just the morale of knowing several high school varsity players were watching us brought out an energy and another level of not letting down past alumni that were watching in the stands. We needed every bit of that in tonight’s game. We had great energy from the tip to the final buzzer at the end of the game.”
Brown said this is one of the better wins of the year.
“Lakewood is a very big, athletic, sharpshooting team,” he said. “We continue to improve and are playing more as a team and making the extra pass of not just getting a good shot, but getting a great shot.”
The B-team is now 6-1 after suffering its first loss of the season, 34-23. Adam Elliott’s 9 points led the way.
“They just struggled to score and seemed to just be a little flat,” Brown said. “Adam and Aaron (Powell) played outstanding, but their time is pretty limited in the B-game and they still supplied 15 of the 23 points. Somehow we have to get others on the B-team to step up and supply some extra energy and effort. When it came down to hustle plays, intensity and energy Lakewood out performed us in all the intangibles.”
The Bullpups play Monday at Salina South.
