McPherson’s seventh-grade boys outlasted Salina Lakewood 41-37 here Thursday and are now 6-1 on the season.
The Bullpups rode a 30-point performance by Seth Madron to the victory.
“Our boys got out to a strong lead and had good composure down the stretch when Lakewood started knocking down some big shots late in the game,” MMS coach Eric Burghart said. “Seth did a fantastic job of getting to the basket and converting some tough baskets. I need to do a better job of putting the rest of our players in better position to show a more balanced attack, but it's tough to shut Seth off when he creates like he has been. Seth, Aiden (Hoover), and Jayden (Dukes) showed great instincts on the defensive end and came away with a few easy baskets which is always helpful when playing a squad like Lakewood. Simon (Boese) has been taking it up a notch at practice lately and it shows in his toughness on the ball.”
The B-team was a 28-17 winner behind 9 points by Brayden Conquest.
“In a lackluster first half in which we were lucky to be down one point, our team did a great job of coming out in the second half and showing great toughness and drive,” Burghart said. “Brayden Conquest had a nose for the ball and was aggressive in getting to the rim. As a whole I was very proud of the defensive effort everyone gave allowing only five second-half points. We did this by limiting second chances and playing great help defense. Braeden Ediger was an absolute beast battling in the lane on both ends of the court and Sky Schriner showed his best physical output of the season by flying all over the court.”
