McPherson High's boys are still looking to put together 32 good minutes.

But they're getting closer.

MHS alternated brilliance with indifference on Friday in a 62-52 victory over Circle in what amounted to a chop-fest as the contest was littered with fouls that extended play deep into the night.

The Bullpups struggled from 3-point (2 of 16) and were just 16 of 29 from the foul line. But they made up for it on the defensive end, keeping T-Bird star Cal Hartley from going off, as he did score 14 points but turned it over 7 times.

The Bullpups improved to 5-3 overall and are 4-0 in AVCTL Division III, with the final game of the first half of league play occurring Tuesday at Augusta.

MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon, like everybody, was frustrated with the constant interruptions in play as both teams got into the double bonus in both halves. But he looked for the positives to concentrate on.

"I thought Jake (Alexander) did a really nice job on Cal," he said. "I thought he didn't give him any open looks, he had a hand up and really made it hard on him. He moved his feet and we limited him."

MHS seemingly had the game on ice at half, up 38-22. But the T-Birds did get it down to as near as 8 before the Bullpups were able to close it out.

Ben Pyle stuffed the stat sheet with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists, while Mason Alexander scored 16 and handed out 4 assists. MHS also had a 35-26 advantage off the glass.

"When your two best scorers have 6 and 4 assists, that's really good," Kinnamon said. "I thought defensively, for the most part, we were really good tonight. We're not where we need to be yet and we'll get better."

In the JV game, Gabe Hoover had his best game of his career with a 22-point explosion as the Bullpups were a 64-47 winner. Kyler Hoppes chipped in with 13 and Aren Trost furnished 11.

The MHS freshmen held off the T-Birds, 60-52. Cooper Courtney was unstoppable with 24 points and Kaleb Hoppes added 12.
