AUGUSTA — It was another early TKO for the McPherson High girls.

The Bullpups continued what has been nearly a season-long pattern on Tuesday by coming out swinging, landing a first-half 1-2 punch on Augusta that keyed a 62-41 knockout.

The Bullpups now have won six games in a row to improve to 8-1, the only loss to No. 2-ranked Miege. MHS also completed the first half of AVCTL Division III play unblemished at 5-0 and really was pushed by only one team, Circle.

Again, MHS' pressure defense was like a vise early as the Bullpups got out to a 16-7 lead and then erupted for 24 second-quarter points to push the advantage to 40-16 at the half.

As has been the Bullpups' wont, they struggled in the third quarter as the Orioles actually won the stanza, but MHS never had any reason to feel uncomfortable.

"We did have a slow start to the second half and we talked about that after the game," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "Of course we focused at halftime not to let up again. But the first 4 minutes (of the second half) weren't very good, but the last 12 were. We weren't always making shots, but we were running things right and had good pace to the way we were playing."

Taylor Robertson scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to lead the Bullpups, while Mandi Cooks posted 12 of her 13 in the first half.

A nice sight to see was the red-hot shooting of Emma Yowell, who hit all four of her shots and three of them were treys as she hit for double figures with 11 points. Strathman knows for the Bullpups to go deep into the postseason that Yowell needs to provide that kind of output.

"She needed to break the ice a little bit and she did tonight," Strathman said of his senior, just one of two on the team. "She didn't hesitate and looked good every time."

Augusta standout Jayden Marlnee, held to 3 points in the first half, scored 14 after the break to lead the Orioles with 17.

MHS will be back home on Friday to take on Andale, weather permitting as there's sleet in the forecast.

It was business as usual for the MHS JV girls as they pounded the Orioles 50-28 behind six 3-pointers by Claire Yowell, who finished with 20 points. Kari Ellet added 10.

In the C-girls game, the Bullpups roared to a 58-24 rout behind 13 points by Andrea Sweat and 10 by Cassie Cooks.
